The purpose of the journal
Our goal in the era of knowledge synthesis is to provide scientists from Russia and all around the world with the modern views on the existing interdisciplinary areas and, especially, on the theory of complex systems.
The conception of interdisciplinary scientific journal "The Complex Systems"
The universe and the world we live in are complex systems. We ourselves are complex systems. Our being, as being of any systems, is determined by interactions with other systems of living and nonliving world. Openness of any complex systems and nonlinearity of their bonds with environment define the character of their being along the whole path of their evolution.  Principles discovered by the modern theory of complexity create a general picture and allow us to reveal trends of evolution of complex systems. The understanding of such principles helps us to develop a basis for nonlinear forecast and to reduce the risk of our being in the world.
The task of studying the entire dynamics of complex systems is inherently interdisciplinary by its nature. Hence, the journal "The Complex Systems" is a genuine interdisciplinary platform for discussion of the newest achievements in complexity studies.
One of the main aims of the journal is accumulation of experimental and theoretical research results in various fields of knowledge which provide us with understanding of structure, development and interaction of complex systems, as well as ways of modeling of physical, chemical, biological, technical, social and other complex systems. Our task is to create a database for generalizations, for synthesis of new ideas, and for promotion of these ideas in scientific and cultural communities.
The focus of the journal is the study of theoretical and applied aspects of the problem of response of complex systems to various external influences as well as of the problem of optimal control of evolution of certain processes, especially under extreme conditions, and of behavior of systems in general. Such researches may serve as a basis for implementation of models of controllable systems in laboratory or in nature.
The interdisciplinary journal "The Complex Systems" aims to unite the efforts of scholars and research groups working in different countries. That is why a number of scientific institutions have supported the idea of creation of this journal, such as the Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other research organizations in Russia. Some leading Russian and foreign scientists, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, biologists, geneticists, geologists, economists, philosophers, sociologists, etc., have entered the editorial board of the journal.
We intend to discuss the scientific achievements in the most advanced areas of interdisciplinary theoretical researches, and the practical applications in the theory of nonlinear oscillations, chaos theory, the study of fractals, of phase transitions, of self-organizing processes and dynamics of complex systems.
It is important for us to promote understanding and development of rules for the adjustment of the principles of social development, so that they would be most consistent with the principles of self-organization and with trends of evolution with the proper number and quality of feedback, in order to protect society from dead-ends. It is no secret that the methods of organization, which develops the Society, do not possess the necessary flexibility of backward linkages. For the first time, a fundamentally new interdisciplinary journal has appeared in informational field of science in Russia. This is not the journal of local interdisciplinarity, but the journal of global, general interdisciplinarity covering all disciplinary fields of science. Such a new approach is a strategy of development of the scientific community in the era of synthesis of scientific achievements. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a multidisciplinary vocabulary, interdisciplinary methods and approaches to enable all the fields of sciences to participate and work on this promising and significant theoretical and methodological platform of researches.
The basis for such interdisciplinary approaches and such kind of interdisciplinarity are:
1) the urgent need of general synthesis of achievements in different disciplinary fields;
2) universality of hierarchical evolution for complex systems of any kind;
3) similarity of principles and trends of evolution;
4) the ability to control the processes of evolution;
5) the strategic need of development of the theory of complex systems for management of risks of social development and for effective social forecast,
6) the need to develop new approaches of mathematical, physical and chemical modeling. Goals and objectives of the journal are formulated from this general point of view which opens possibility for participation of scholars of different fields in scientific discussions on the pages of the journal.

Editorial policy:
Our editorial policy is determined by an independent checking for compliance with the interests of the journal and the quality of published articles. This is guaranteed by the Editorial Council and the Editorial Board. We are proud of the fact that members of our Editorial Board are prominent scientists from the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Mexico and other countries. The Council and Editorial Board also consist of the leading scientists of the Russian scientific organizations (The Lomonosov Moscow State University, National Research University Higher school of Economics, The Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, The O.Yu. Schmidt Institute of Earth Physics, Institute of Physics of Strength and Material Science of the Siberian Branch of RAS, Tomsk, etc.)
We strive for sharing and dissemination of the achievements of Russian scientists in such areas as the theory of modes with exacerbations, synergetics, cumulative-dissipative, nonlinear hierarchical theory of evolution and co-evolution of different time period, and the theory of cognitive and environmental landscapes all over  the international scientific  community.
We welcome scholars from other countries to become authors of our journal. We would like to make our journal a platform for the international comparative discussion of various aspects of the complexity in the world regardless of nationality.
Study of the principles of formation of a subsystem of the society in the super-system of the biosphere is our goal as well. Despite the view that the concept of globalization does not fully represent the knowledge of the principles of co-evolution, we aim to develop this approach of comparisons. We need to organize an international scientific platform for discussion of problems arising during the implementation of similar research methods in different scientific communities. Our journal can be viewed as a platform for such a dialogue. This niche can be among our successful applications in terms of comprehension of the principles of co-evolution of subsystems with different time period (biosphere and society).
I would like to thank all the members of our Editorial Council and the Editorial Board for joining us in this new, important, ambitious, and promising project.
O. P. Ivanov
